This workshop will help you begin to capture your family’s stories. We’ll look at how to . . .

    • Start with Yourself: Autobiographical Writing
    • Organize Your Writing Using MS Word
    • Handle Family Mythology
    • Gather ideas for Many Creative Writing Projects

 

How it works:
The day will include several short lectures and time to practice. You’ll have the chance to learn by observing and by doing. You can work via pen and paper or on the computer, whichever way is comfortable for you. Bring your own laptop or use our office computers (Windows).

 

Bonus Class for Participants Only

Your registration includes an additional class on Saturday, 3 October, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. This time will be set aside for sharing, writing and editing, and receiving support from the group. 

 

What to bring:

  • A laptop or use one of our society computers (no tablets, please)
  • Relevant information on anyone you’d like to write about

Biographical Information on the Speaker:

Ilene Murray has been a genealogy researcher for more than forty years. A retired English and computer teacher, she has been publications director for the St. Louis Genealogical Society since 2000. She co-leads the society’s annual research trip to Salt Lake City and is a co-leader of the society’s Jewish Special Interest Group. She serves on the society’s technology and social media teams and teaches genealogy and computer classes.

Ilene has been a writer and editor all of her life, beginning with a local newspaper column when she was a teenager. As publications director, she designs StLGS flyers, brochures, bookmarks, etc. She writes and edits the society’s weekly blog, STLGS News Flash, writes for and edits the StLGS Quarterly , and creates, writes and edits pages for the StLGS website. She’s published three books, edited several family histories for friends, and contributes to local and national genealogical publications.
