History

Established in 1882; closed in 1998.

Founded in 1882 as Cheltenham Congregational Church, the congregation’s
first frame building stood on West Park Avenue between Sublette and Pierce
in St. Louis.

In 1886, the congregation changed its name to Memorial Congregational
Church in memory of Dr. Constans Goodell, a former pastor of Pilgrim
Church who had taken an interest in its work.

The congregation later moved to Sulphur Avenue and Way Street. In 1911,
it began construction of a new church at the corner of Victoria Avenue
and Graham Street in St. Louis’s Dogtown neighborhood.

The congregation moved into the new church in June 1912 and remained
there until it closed in 1998.
